Buddhist Publication Society
The
Buddhist Publication Society (BPS), founded in Sri Lanka
in 1958, is an approved charity dedicated to making known the teaching of the Buddha. BPS
publications represent the standpoint of Theravada Buddhism, the oldest living Buddhist
tradition whose Pali Canon gives us the most authentic account of what the historical
Buddha himself actually taught. In a span of thirty-five years the BPS has become a major
Buddhist publisher with hundreds of titles and a field of distribution extending to ninety
countries.
Among our publications are two English-language periodicals issued three times per year, The Wheel and Bodhi Leaves. The Wheel series consists of substantial booklets covering topics that range from basic Buddhist teachings to Buddhist philosophy, psychology, meditation and the applcation of Buddhist principles to modern life. The series also includes accurate annotated translations of the Buddhas discourses from the Pali Canon. Bodhi Leaves is a series of shorter tracts expressing personal insights into the Buddhas Way. Past issues of both series are available singly and in bound volumes. For readers of Sinhala the BPS publishes a series of booklets on Buddhism called Damsak; this is issued three times per year and back issues are also available singly and in bound volumes.
Besides these booklets, BPS publishes a growing number of full-length books. These include standard introductions to Buddhism, translations from the Pali Canon and its commentaries, works on meditation and original contemporary expositions of Buddhist thought. Altogether, our publications constitute a voluminous reference library on Theravada Buddhism.
